Early Reading

At Stoke St Gregory Primary School, we believe that learning to read is one of the most important things we teach. Strong early reading unlocks learning across the curriculum and lays the foundation for future success. We are committed to ensuring every child becomes a confident, fluent reader who enjoys books and reads for pleasure.

Our Phonics Approach

We teach early reading through a systematic synthetic phonics programme, delivered every day in small, focused groups. Lessons follow a clear structure and include opportunities for children to revisit prior learning, practise new sounds and apply their knowledge in reading and writing. All staff delivering phonics are trained to ensure high‑quality, consistent teaching.

We match reading books carefully to each child’s current phonics stage. This means children read books they can decode independently, helping them build confidence, fluency and enjoyment.

We use an accredited phonics programme called Unlocking Letters and Sounds. Below is the progression of letters and sounds children will follow in the scheme.

Reading Practice and Support

Children read regularly in school through:

  • daily phonics sessions
  • guided reading and small‑group practice
  • decodable books sent home
  • daily story time and rich read‑aloud experiences

We closely monitor progress. Any child who is at risk of falling behind is given additional support straight away, including same‑day intervention, extra reading practice and targeted teaching.

In these crucial early stages of reading we primarily use books from Ransom Reading Stars, who work in partnership with Unlocking Letters and Sounds, to ensure complete fidelity to the phonic progression we follow.

Once children progress beyond decodable texts, they move onto our book scheme so that they can continue to progress in their decoding, fluency and comprehension skills to become avid, expert readers.

A Love of Reading

Alongside teaching the mechanics of reading, we want children to develop a genuine love of books. Each day includes time to enjoy stories, poems and non‑fiction. Our reading areas and school library are designed to inspire curiosity and help children discover new authors and texts.

We also work closely with families, encouraging regular shared reading at home and providing information about how best to support early reading.

By the End of Key Stage 1

Our aim is that all children:

  • can read accurately, fluently and with understanding
  • use phonics confidently to decode unfamiliar words
  • develop strong comprehension through talk and shared reading
  • enjoy books and choose to read for pleasure

We ensure pupils leave KS1 ready to access the full curriculum with confidence and enthusiasm.
